Commercial Solar Case Studies: NYC & North Jersey
Documented inspection and O&M findings from Wadadli Solar's commercial and off-grid portfolio. Most of the NYC-area cases involve three-phase SolarEdge systems, consistent with the roughly 80% to 85% of our commercial field work concentrated on that platform. SMA and other platforms are included where they reflect the system actually installed, and our Antigua & Barbuda work centers on off-grid, battery, EG4, and load-monitoring projects rather than SolarEdge.
Enclosure Repair Avoids Full Inverter Replacement
Weather-corroded cabinet on a three-phase commercial SolarEdge inverter repaired in place rather than replacing the unit. Compatible legacy cabinet hardware and covers, drawn from decommissioned SolarEdge inventory, were evaluated and used where technically appropriate.
Legacy Parts Recovery From a Decommissioned SolarEdge Inverter
A decommissioned three-phase SolarEdge inverter provided a DC disconnect component and power cable, both evaluated for condition and compatibility before being used to return an active commercial unit to service without a full replacement order.
Cellular Kit Cross-Testing Restores Monitoring
A commercial SolarEdge site went dark on monitoring with no production loss. Swapping in a known-good cellular kit isolated the fault to the modem rather than carrier signal or the inverter itself, restoring reporting without further diagnostics.
Optimizer RMA Support: Field Documentation for Warranty Claim
Recurring PLC communication breaks traced to a specific failing optimizer. Field documentation and diagnostic evidence from SolarEdge GO string analysis supported the owner’s optimizer RMA claim with the manufacturer.
Redundant EG4 Off-Grid System With Manual Utility Bypass
A redundant off-grid installation built around two EG4 6000XP inverters and EG4 outdoor battery storage, designed for redundancy and serviceability rather than relying solely on the inverters’ internal automatic transfer switching. An external contactor-based changeover lets the owner manually select inverter power or utility power if equipment develops a problem, so a single inverter or transfer-system fault does not leave the property without a straightforward backup path. Actual load monitoring after commissioning surfaced consumption the original site survey had not captured; EG4’s modular, networkable, parallel-capable architecture lets the system expand as the real load profile becomes better understood.
Modernizing a Legacy Off-Grid System With Instrumentation and Load Monitoring
An existing off-grid system, a standalone pure sine wave inverter, separate solar charge controllers, a LiTime-type battery bank, and a manual contactor changeover arrangement, was left in place rather than replaced. Instrumentation was added instead: a Victron 500A battery shunt, Emporia AC energy monitoring, and circuit-level load monitoring, to reveal battery charge and discharge behavior, household consumption, individual circuit loads, inverter output, overnight demand, and how the system actually operates day to day. Older off-grid equipment does not always need replacement; often the most valuable first step is adding measurement so the owner and technician can see what the system is actually doing.
Optimizer String Fault: Eastchester Residential Complex
String underperformance traced to a failing P400 optimizer creating a PLC communication break affecting all downstream units. Identified via thermal imaging and SolarEdge GO string analysis. One replacement resolved the string.
RS485 Bus Break: Multi-Inverter SMA Site
Three SMA Sunny Boy units showing offline in Sunny Portal. Physical RS485 wiring damaged at a junction box in the mechanical room. System continuing to produce but data gap undetected for 6 months before annual O&M visit.
Rodent Nesting: MC4 Connector Damage
Rodent nesting colony established under a large flat roof array. MC4 connectors on three strings damaged. Conduit breaches allowing moisture ingress. Discovered during routine inspection before fault condition developed.
Thermal Anomaly: Bypass Diode Failure
Infrared scan during annual PM identified four modules with classic bypass diode activation thermal signature; approximately one-third of each module was significantly hotter than neighboring modules. Modules flagged for warranty review.
Severe Soiling: Production Loss Misattributed
O&M provider attributed 18% production decline to "seasonal variation." Independent inspection found severe differential soiling; one roof section was accumulating significantly more contamination than others due to HVAC exhaust placement. Cleaning restored production.
Inverter Replacement: Warranty Documentation
SolarEdge HD-Wave inverter exhibiting persistent isolation fault. Owner needed independent documentation to support warranty claim with manufacturer. Assessment confirmed fault origin and provided required field documentation for warranty replacement authorization.
